About Jack's Place

Established in 1966, Jack's Place is the trusted favourite known for its Western food. It all started when Mr. Say Lip Hai arrived in Singapore from Hainan Island and started as a cook boy with the British troops in Sembawang. There he learned how to prepare the perfect roast beef and Yorkshire pudding.

Having tasted one of Mr Say's now famous meals, a British housewife suggested he start a catering business with her husband, Jack Hunt, in his pub at Killiney Road, Jack's Place, which he started in 1966. Mr Say agreed and commenced that partnership in 1968. Shortly afterwards, Jack Hunt sold his share of the business, but his namesake 'Jack the Chef' still runs the kitchen today!

Today, Jack's Place is the trusted favourite for family and friends to enjoy great value sizzling steaks, speciality meals, and sumptuous cakes. Jack's Place is committed to serving quality food and creating memorable dining experiences in a cheerful and cosy environment for our guests.

Southern Ocean Lodge Invites Dark-sky Travelers to Watch for the Southern Lights on Kangaroo Island

Southern Ocean Lodge on Kangaroo Island is inviting travellers to experience the spectacular Aurora Australis, or Southern Lights, during the 2026 winter season. Perched on the island’s dramatic southern coastline and far from urban light pollution, the luxury lodge offers ideal conditions for stargazing, night photography, and aurora viewing when favourable weather and geomagnetic activity coincide.

The Aurora Australis is created when charged particles from the sun interact with gases in Earth’s atmosphere near the South Pole, producing colourful displays of green, pink, and purple light across the night sky. According to the Australian Bureau of Meteorology’s Space Weather Forecasting Centre, the best opportunities to view the phenomenon in 2026 are expected between 12–16 July (peak on 14 July), 10–14 August (peak on 12 August), and 8–12 September (peak on 10 September).

Kangaroo Island is recognised as one of southern Australia’s premier aurora-viewing destinations thanks to its uninterrupted south-facing ocean views, minimal artificial lighting, and naturally dark skies. Although sightings cannot be guaranteed, the longer nights of winter increase the chances of witnessing the elusive natural phenomenon.

Guests at Southern Ocean Lodge can enjoy the experience directly from the property’s clifftop setting, where sweeping views of the Southern Ocean create an exceptional backdrop. Photography enthusiasts can capture the lights using modern smartphones with night mode or professional cameras with long-exposure settings, although patience, clear skies, and a little luck remain essential.

General Manager Robyn Bautovich described the experience as unforgettable, noting that the aurora’s glow across the ocean and limestone cliffs creates an extraordinary spectacle. Guests are encouraged to monitor official space weather forecasts and local cloud conditions to maximise their chances of seeing the Southern Lights.

Resplendent Ceylon Spotlights Sri Lanka's Emerald Season as Demand Grows for Year-Round Travel

Resplendent Ceylon is promoting Sri Lanka’s traditional off-season, from April to September, as the Emerald Season, encouraging travellers to discover the island’s lush landscapes, rich cultural traditions, and exceptional wildlife while avoiding peak tourist crowds. As seasonal rains rejuvenate forests, tea plantations, mountains, and national parks, visitors can enjoy vibrant scenery, flowing waterfalls, mist-covered hills, and flourishing countryside.

The Emerald Season also coincides with many of Sri Lanka’s most important cultural and religious festivals, offering visitors an authentic insight into the island’s heritage. Celebrations begin with the Sinhala and Tamil New Year in April, followed by Vesak in May, when colourful lanterns illuminate towns and cities, and Poson in June, commemorating the arrival of Buddhism. Later in the season, travellers can experience the famous Esala Perahera in Kandy, the vibrant Nallur Festival in Jaffna, and the Kataragama Perahera, showcasing Sri Lanka’s multicultural and spiritual traditions.

Nature lovers also benefit from outstanding wildlife experiences during this period. Between July and October, the internationally renowned Minneriya Gathering sees up to 300 wild Asian elephants congregate around the ancient Minneriya Tank, while the island’s national parks provide excellent opportunities to observe Sri Lanka’s diverse wildlife in lush surroundings.

Guests staying at Resplendent Ceylon can experience the Emerald Season across a variety of landscapes, from the cool tea-covered hills of the Central Highlands to the peaceful southern beaches and the wildlife-rich wilderness of Yala National Park.

By encouraging travel beyond the traditional peak season, the Emerald Season offers greater value, fewer crowds, authentic local experiences, and supports sustainable tourism by spreading visitor numbers more evenly throughout the year while benefiting local communities and preserving Sri Lanka’s natural and cultural heritage.
